If you've tried to buy a fast electric scooter in New York recently, you may have noticed that things changed very quickly.
Segway now says scooters with top speeds over 20 mph are unavailable for shipping to New York State. Apollo has also stopped shipping its faster electric scooters to New York State following recent enforcement action in New York City.
VMAX is complying with NYC's restrictions too, and will not ship our high-performance scooters to a New York City address.
But we've heard from riders who still want to buy fast e-scooters for use outside the city.
So we've created another option.
New Jersey Pickup for NYC-Area Customers
NYC-area customers can now arrange pickup through a VMAX partner e-bike shop in New Jersey for $65.
Select the New Jersey pickup option during checkout and we'll arrange to have your scooter delivered to the shop for pickup.
Simple.
Of course, where you ride still matters.
Picking up a scooter in New Jersey does not make it legal to operate on NYC streets. Scooters faster than 20 mph also fall outside New York State's definition of an electric scooter, and scooters 19 mph or faster face additional restrictions in New Jersey.
But living in New York City doesn't mean you never leave New York.
Some riders travel with their scooters. Some ride on private property. Some spend weekends outside the city or state. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to own a higher-performance scooter for use where local law allows it.
What Changed in NYC?
In August 2026, New York City announced a major enforcement action against online retailers selling high-speed e-bikes and electric scooters into the city.
VMAX was not one of the companies that received a notice, but we decided to comply as soon as we became aware of the enforcement action.
According to the Mayor's Office, motorized stand-up scooters capable of traveling faster than 20 mph, or weighing more than 100 pounds, cannot legally be sold or operated on NYC streets. The city also told more than 40 online retailers to stop shipping prohibited vehicles into New York City's 175 ZIP codes.
